Tom Selleck returned to primetime TV Friday night with "Blue Bloods," a new series about several generations of police officers.

Selleck plays New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan who serving in a job he inherited from his father (Len Cariou) Toiling with him in the street of New York are two sons (Will Estes and Donnie Wahlberg) on the force and a daughter (Bridget Moynahan) in the district attorney's office .
The show is blend of cop drama and family drama and elements of both turned up in the first episode about a girl's kidnapping in the mostly Hispanic Washington Heights section of the city.
The show has gotten mainly favorable reviews and benfitted from a lead-in from "CSI: NY," a workhorse show at CBS, which itself has undergone some cast changes over the summer.
Selleck is familiar on the small screen for his years playing Hawaii-based private investigator Thomas Magnum on the 1980s television show "Magnum, P.I." He is also familiar to CBS viewers as a cop, having appeared as Jesse Stone in a number of made-for-TV movies about a small-town police chief
